Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by the excessive development of breast tissue in males. It is a much more common condition than one might imagine and can sometimes lead to significant psychological issues. It manifests in various forms and with varying degrees, ranging from the presence of a glandular disc behind the areola to the development of a fully-formed, feminine-shaped breast.

The excessive volume can be due to:

  • Excessive development of adipose tissue in the breast.
  • Excessive development of mammary gland tissue (normally present in males) due to hormonal reasons.
  • Excessive development of both adipose tissue and mammary gland.
  • Neoplasm of the mammary gland (extremely rare).

Generally, the condition tends to affect individuals who are overweight or have a history of obesity.

What to do?

The diagnosis must be accurately established, and the examination should be thorough and focused on identifying the primary causes that triggered the condition. Hormonal tests may be useful in some cases, and a breast ultrasound is essential in certain situations.

What solutions?

In rare cases of hormonal imbalance, it is necessary to balance metabolism before considering surgical solutions.

For cases of severe obesity, a diet is recommended.

In the vast majority of cases, however, surgical intervention leads to immediate and resolving results. Typically, excess adipose tissue is aspirated through liposuction. The cannula is introduced through a small incision (1 cm) in the axillary fold, and the excess fat is aspirated. In some cases, the removal of residual glandular tissue may be necessary through a small incision at the areolar border.

The procedure is performed in the operating room, often on an outpatient basis, under local or general anesthesia, and typically lasts an average of 40 minutes to 1 hour. The recovery is rapid, and pain is minimal.

Excellent results are achieved when the surgeon is experienced and skilled in minimally invasive breast techniques.

The procedure can be performed under local assisted or general anesthesia. It is carried out in well-equipped facilities that can ensure the highest level of care, as safety is the foremost criterion to pursue.
