In the vast majority of cases, the issue of drooping upper eyelids is often caused by excess skin and fat, and it can be addressed with an upper blepharoplasty procedure. The anatomical structure of the upper eyelid includes skin, the orbicularis oculi muscle (responsible for closing and squinting the eye), and adipose tissue (containing two fat pads). Additionally, the functionality of a muscle called the levator palpebrae, situated deeper, is essential for lifting the eyelid and should be taken into consideration.
The upper blepharoplasty technique
The upper blepharoplasty procedure is quick. It begins by marking the excess skin. Under local anesthesia, the removal of the excess skin and adipose tissue is carried out. Occasionally, a portion of the orbicularis oculi muscle may also be excised to lighten the eyelid structure. The procedure takes less than half an hour, and the postoperative recovery is swift.
Drooping of the eyebrow
Brow ptosis (drooping) is the primary cause of aging in the upper eyelid region. It is often a misunderstood cause because a drooping eyelid is mistakenly considered the primary origin, but that is not the case. Gravity pulling the tissues downward and the action of the muscles around the eyebrows push the eyebrow downward, covering the eyelid.
How to correct eyebrow drooping?
Correction of eyebrow drooping can be achieved through a brow lift, a procedure that can be performed either through traditional methods (coronal incision) or with the more modern endoscopic approach. The use of optical fibers inserted through three small incisions in the scalp allows for the elevation of the entire frontal region. Additionally, for lifting the two lateral thirds of the eyebrow, the subperiosteal mini-lift technique with minimal incision has proven to be very useful, involving only a single incision of approximately 4 cm in the temporal region. Finally, in some cases, especially in older individuals requiring functional treatment, the removal of a diamond-shaped section of skin just above the eyebrow hairs may be considered.
