Facial senescence

Also called face lift, it is a surgical procedure that aims to visibly improve the signs of aging on the face. In fact, over the years the skin and the underlying structures, including the muscles, tend to lose elasticity. The face lift does not stop this process, but is able to considerably reduce the signs of aging by repositioning the deep structures, modeling the superficial ones and removing particularly unsightly fatty deposits.

Senescence and signs of aging on the face

With the aging process we witness: - slipping of subcutaneous and cutaneous tissues - loss of volume in the malar region and cheek with volume gain in the jaw - appearance of creases - loss of skin tone and appearance of fine wrinkles

The facelift treatment

The concept of pulling at all costs has been largely overtaken by that of restoring volume and shape, therefore the ideal facelift treatment must aim to restore volume, shape and give tension to the skin. Since each face has different characteristics and needs, the intervention must be adapted to the individual also in accordance with each person’s recovery possibilities.

Face lifting techniques

Face lifting techniques are distinguished according to two parameters.
1) Based on the length of the scars:
– minimal incision facelift (minilift)
– complete facelifts (with preauricular, retroauricular and temporal incisions)
– endoscopic facelifts

2) Based on the depth of tissue dissection:
– superficial facelifts
– deep facelifts with dissection of the smass (deep musculoaponeurotic structure)
– deep facelifts with subperiosteal dissection

Ancillary procedures often associated with face lift:

– lipostructure of the face
– blepharoplasty and eyebrow surgery
– chin, cheekbone and lip shaping
– laser resurfacing
– suspension wires

News and trends of modern surgery

Modern surgery tends towards procedures with minimal incisions but associated with ancillary techniques. For example: minilift plus blepharoplasty plus lipostructure plus laser resurfacing. Beware of misleading advertisements for “lunch break minilifts” and procedures proposed too lightly. This is not the case, an operation always leads to a post-operative period whose length is often proportionate to its effectiveness. A postoperative course that is too rapid is often a harbinger of apparent and unconvincing results.

In expert hands the results are striking and the scars imperceptible, as they are masked in natural folds. However, it is a good idea to discuss at length with the surgeon the type of operation he intends to perform and the changes to be made to the face.
