Otoplasty

The ear shaping operation is called reductive otoplasty. This operation allows you to correct ears that are excessively detached (fan ears), not fully developed (loop ears) or too large (reduction otoplasty).

Ear shaping techniques

There are numerous techniques described in the literature. The surgeon has several techniques in his surgical baggage which, depending on the case, can be used individually or combined. Generally, an incision is made behind the ear in a poorly visible area, the excess conchal cartilage is modeled or removed and the sutures are placed. We then proceed, if necessary, to model the anthelix.

The surgery

To carry out the operation, an electrocardiogram and sometimes blood tests must be performed.
The procedure is routinely carried out in day surgery and lasts on average 60-90 minutes. At the end of the operation, a bandage is applied which must remain in place for a couple of days. Once this has been removed, a tennis or ski band is applied, which can subsequently be replaced by a simple bandana, which must be worn for approximately 30 days.
The postoperative course is characterized by modest pain that can be easily controlled by common analgesic drugs.

When can it be done?

Few know that the human ear is already formed in both males and females at the age of 5/7 years. In theory, therefore, it could already be done at this age, but it is advisable to wait longer in order to have a more cooperative and well-motivated patient.
