Introduce yourself

I am Massimiliano Brambilla. I was born in Milan, and I spent my childhood and adolescence as a happy child in my city. I had a religious education in elementary school (Ursuline Sisters) and a secular education in middle school (San Celso Institute). I attended the classical high school at Tito Livio, where I spent 5 years of great pleasure and intellectual stimulation. As a child and teenager, I was busy with English and German studies, competitive rowing, and playing the guitar... in short, my parents didn't let me miss anything.

Medicine has always fascinated me

Especially in its anatomical aspects. Discovering the human body and its mysteries was one of my pastimes even when I was a teenager. So, it seemed natural to enroll in the medical school.

I then enrolled at the University of Milan. From the first year, I remember the encounter with two prominent figures of broad culture and infinite humanity, two great medical historians, Bruno Zanobio and Giuseppina Bock Berti, who made me discover the humanistic side of medicine and how closely it was linked to philosophy. They told me that if the faculty of medicine had separated from the philosophical faculties only in 1920 and until that date was not part of the scientific faculties, there was a reason… and they were right. Medicine is not just technical expertise; there is much, much more to it. Medicine is not just giving a pill or saving a patient with the best surgical procedure; it is much more: it is about listening and understanding the visible and invisible ailments, seeing the physical and glimpsing the soul’s afflictions, giving attention, and finding the right words to say there is hope or that there isn’t.

After completing the first year, I felt the need to experience the hospital up close. The opportunity came from a celebratory congress held at the Mangiagalli clinic, where I was involved by the medical historians. On that occasion, I got to know another key figure in my life, Laura Sanchioni, a passionate pathologist and one of the leading experts in congenital malformations. She was a great and eclectic personality who captivated me with the subject, revealing the aberrations that nature can create. I passionately frequented the department, and one day, while we were performing an autopsy on a malformed newborn with a cleft lip, Laura told me to knock on the door of the plastic surgery department where cleft lips were treated to see how nature could be repaired.

The game was on.

It was the second year of university, and I started attending the plastic surgery department

The department, where I still work today, had a great history and reputation. It was founded in the 1930s by Gustavo Sanvenero Rosselli, the father of Italian plastic surgery. Those who worked there carried the burden of that legacy. I had the opportunity to meet Franco Mussinelli, who had led the department for twenty years. I remember him as a very serious man. Unfortunately, I did not have the chance to get to know him because he passed away shortly after. Armando Carù succeeded him, and he had made the care of cleft lip and congenital malformations a life mission. I owe much to him and other surgeons I worked with, including Tito Cipollini and Franco Campagna, with whom I still collaborate.

The department specialized in congenital malformations and was quite extensive: children’s, women’s, and men’s sections with a total of 40 beds. My days were incredibly busy: I attended the surgery department in the morning, went to pathology in the afternoon for dissecting activities, and in the evening, I attended university courses for working students.

Fortunately, I have always slept 5-6 hours per night. I found everything interesting, absorbed everything I saw, and was always excited. I must say that the passion for my work has never left me for a moment. I continue to thank the heavens every morning because I do a job that I love and am passionate about. You cannot think of medicine as just a job. It is infinitely more: it is total involvement.
